A new study by Millenial Branding titled “The Multi-Generational Job Search,” breaks down the differences in job search methods employed by Gen Y, Gen X and Baby Boomers. There were some surprising findings when it came to which methods each generation was utilizing. It also delved into the attitude differences in these job seekers. Overall, the information is both interesting and useful when it comes to selecting potential hires. It’s great to know just what approach each prospective generation is most likely to take.
Perhaps the most interesting find of all, is that Baby Boomers are the most likely out of any generation to rely most heavily on the internet to find work. Even though pretty much everyone does the majority of their job search online these days, surprisingly Gen Y is the most likely to take to the streets so to speak, to find work. 96% of Baby Boomers do their job searching online, 95% of Gen X and 92% of Gen Y. Gen Y was the most likely to be doing job searching off the internet. This could be because they are also more likely to take retail, and food service jobs, which are often “apply in person” type of jobs. While job boards proved the most popular job search choice for all generations, Boomers took the lead, with 87% of Baby Boomers choosing job boards over any other form of job search. 82% of Gen X, and 77% of Gen Y named job boards as their go-to choice for finding work.
Gen Y is also the quickest to get back to work and the most optimistic about the future. 88% of Gen Y say they are optimistic about their job search, only 81% of Gen X and 73% of Boomers say the same. As far as employment gaps of over a year, boomers were the most likely to suffer with 25%. Next was Gen X with 17%, and only 10% of Gen Y. Finding work in less than a month is most likely for Gen Y, with 33%, Gen X was next with 29% and finally Boomers with 24%. Perhaps it’s Gen Y’s willingness to get back to work that keeps them optimistic.
Of course different generations approach everything slightly differently, just like different personalities, genders and the like. It’s important for us as to recruiters to acknowledge and consider these differences when hiring. It’s also important for each generation to look at their strengths and weaknesses, and make improvements where applicable.
